Contains personal and professional correspondence, notes, memoranda, manuscripts, book reviews, press releases, teaching materials, offprints of published and unpublished historical and political writings, photographs, scrapbooks, personal and political memorabilia, and speech transcripts. Papers document Merriam's World War II experiences, including research material relating to his account of the Battle of the Bulge, Dark December; his career as Chicago alderman of the Fifth Ward; and his 1955 mayoral candidacy against Richard J. Daley. Materials also reflect positions Merriam held, such as Deputy Director of the United States Bureau of the Budget; aide to President Dwight Eisenhower, Chairman of the Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations; and his connections with the national political and Illinois business communities. Papers constitute an important source on Chicago politics leading up to the Daley regime and the changes in federalism during the 1970s.
